Whats in a Name?

ComputerWorld blogger Seth Weintraub does a great job looking at the way Apple names its products. It's not an iPod D-2903, just an iPod. There's no different levels of "iMac-ness", just a 17, 20 and 24" inch models...done. No hard to define codes or numbers, just iPhone, iPod Nano, Airport, Macbook and MacBook Pro. If you want a better/faster Airport, you get the Airport Extreme, want a smaller one, get the Airport Express. Gone are the days with the Performa 5215/75 and PowerMac 8100/80. What the hell is that mess? I'll wait while you Google it. Who has the time to figure out the maze of numbers in a Dell or Sony Name? What about your Cell Phone? I know that Nokia has plenty of models to choose from, but really? Anyone remember the Acura Legend? Acura got mad and dropped name in the US because they felt their branding was at stake. Many owners when asked what they drive would answer "A Legend" instead of "An Acura Legend." So what, in my mind its one and the same, but Acura felt differently and I think missed the ball on that great brand name.

When asked what type of Apple mp3 player or laptop or phone you have--its always "An iPod, MacBook Pro or iPhone" not "An Apple iPod or Apple MacBook Pro or Apple iPhone." And certinaly not "a X1234-09, or N85 or WRT-54G." It's simple, it's sleek and it's easy to remember.

I don't think other companies get it. Read Seths excellent article here.
