2006 Stevenote

Geez I want one of those new Powerbooks, but what I really wanted to hear was an announcement about the video service. With the announcement of iPods before the holiday shopping season and the announcement of Aperture at PhotoPlus and now the announcement of only Macintosh products at Macworld, a precedent has been set; there will now be a yearly announcement schedule which centers on relevant events and buying periods. The real surprises, ie new business initiatives like video download services will be done whenever they are expedient. Good thing with all this litigation going on, Apple wouldn't want to have it's hand forced.

I'm really glad I'm not one of the ones who bought one of the previous powerbooks and geez I want one of the new ones. I won't bother though, because my 1.25mhz will be fine for a while longer.

iLife is looking very cool, especially with the iWeb features. I just wish I didn't feel so fenced in to .Mac, it's not the price of .Mac it's the lack of storage space. What good is 1GB? I get more than that on my Gmail account and unlike .Mac it isn't even intended for things like publishing videos, backing up, and sharing files, it's ONLY email. And, why doesn't the Apple web page tell you ANYWERE what the price is for storage upgrades? Who knows, maybe it is worth it.

1 GB would be fine for putting up a simple web portal and some photos and podcasts, and with the new bandwith quotas, I may get a .Mac account all this complaining is probably moot. Being able to use the switchblog.com url would seal the deal, and I'm not talking about a redirect, I'm talking real, authoritative DNS. When that happens, I'll "switch" the hosting of this blog to .Mac.

UPDATE 01-11-2006

I just spoke on the phone with an Apple technician who says that you can use iWeb without .Mac. WOOHOOOO! I even asked to make sure that he was talking about exporting sites complete with themes, unlike iPhoto which could previously only make non-.Mac photo sites on a plain white page. I wish I had an evaluation copy of iLife so I could go through and test each feature specifically, but alas, I do not, and I'm still not 100% sure I want to buy it since I am considering a purchase of Aperture, and I already use Photoshop, Dreamweaver and other professional tools for my other stuff. Ahh, what the heck, it's only $79.
